Each person has a unique path into and out from depression. This 8 week program on Zoom will give you tools to find your most direct route to feeling better. With degrees from Harvard and University of Denver, I am a social worker and coach, specializing in depression recovery. This group can give you knowledge you might be missing on how to put depression behind you.
People who haven’t experienced depression don’t understand what a substantial burden it is to carry. It steals motivation, confidence, and pleasure. We can lose sight of goals and end up in a coping mode, trying to just get through each day.
It is so easy to take depression personally. We see symptoms of overwhelm, lethargy, irritability, or hopelessness as evidence that we are a defective mess.
But in truth, depression is not personal; it is a normal and painful part of being human. One in five American adults experience major depression at some point. And tens of millions more deal with mild depression that damps down their lives.
But there seriously is hope….
In “Getting Unstuck from Depression,” you will learn how to…
- Break free from believing society’s stigma and shame around mental health
- Question and mistrust the painful, negative thoughts and beliefs that accompany depression.
- Use time management tips that decrease feelings of overwhelm and increase structure and a sense of control
- Make doable and sustainable changes in exercise, sleep, nutrition, and weight loss
- Rule out possible biochemical causes of your depression – such as anemia, low thyroid, neurotransmitter imbalance, vitamin deficiencies, low testosterone, menopause, or side effects from another medication
- Prevent or address seasonal affective disorder (The Winter Blues)
- Manage and constructively express anger, grief, and other emotions in ways that fight depression
- Trust your discernment and intuition and set more self-respecting boundaries
- Make life direction choices that fight depression. These are choices that increase connection and a sense of purpose, and line up with what you most love, value, and enjoy
- Take steps to truly improve the health of your relationships – decreasing stress, drama, and depression.
- And much more…
Why I created these groups…
As a social worker and coach, I love helping others recover from depression. My goal is to help you have more clarity and well-being and less suffering on your path to healing.
In my twenties and early thirties I dealt with serious depression, so I have an idea of how rough it can be. I worked hard to find my way out – seeking help and answers from doctors, therapists, research, and classes.
I believe that being honest with ourselves is crucial to changing our lives. When we honor the truth of how we really feel, the truth of what we want, and the truth of what we honestly do not want, our lives transform.
The good news is that you don’t need hope right now. All you need is to keep taking each next small step. Just because something “feels” unobtainable, does not mean that it is. With persistence, you can find your keys to recovery.
My heartfelt wish for the group is that you will discover missing pieces of your recovery puzzle, allowing you to move forward on a path that truly works for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a depression seminar be depressing?
This is a practical recovery program, not just an emotional support group. We each work to identify what is fueling our particular depression and getting the support we need to take the next, doable steps forward. We cover specifics of how to unwind old physical, cognitive, emotional, and life choice patterns that have fed depression.
You might have noticed that people who have experienced a lot of depression can often have great senses of humor. There will be a lot of laughter, inspiration, and compassion.
Will there be much homework?
About 30 – 45 Minutes each week. And if you choose, you are invited to email me a confidential weekly update.
Who is the group for?
“Getting Unstuck from Depression” is currently designed for people dealing with mild to moderate depression. It is not meant to take the place of individual counseling.
Will I have to share a lot about myself?
It’s totally your choice each time. You will likely end up comfortable enough in the group that it feels like chatting or an inspiring discussion rather than “sharing.” We will use discussion and a lot of short writing exercises.
